The Girl Who Played with Fire

The Girl Who Played with Fire is a 2009 Swedish crime thriller directed by Daniel Alfredson, adapted from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novel. The second film in the original Swedish trilogy, it stars Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander and Michael Nyqvist as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

Nordic noir is shot in a cold, near-documentary register, which means its visual effects have to be the kind an audience never registers: muzzle flashes and blood hits married into live-action plates, rig and wire removal across stunt work, paint-out of unwanted intrusions from city streets, screen inserts for the hacking and surveillance material the plot turns on, and fire and smoke simulation where a practical burn can only be taken so far. Terminal FX works in precisely those areas — compositing, rotoscoping and cleanup, FX simulation, CG environments and set extensions — and contributed visual effects and animation to The Girl Who Played with Fire, one title among the studio’s film, television and commercial projects.
