Concept art and character work for The Devil’s Promise
Concept art and character design produced for The Devil’s Promise, the 2022 supernatural thriller series: mood-driven visual development, creature and character concepts, and the design exploration that settles a production’s tone before anything is built or shot. This is the front end of the pipeline, where a look is argued out in images rather than words.
Horror puts a particular demand on design, because the thing being designed usually works best when it is only half seen. A creature concept has to survive that: silhouette readable in low light, proportions unsettling without tipping into the absurd, anatomy coherent enough that riggers and animators can later make it move without contradiction. Much of the work is deciding what to withhold — how much of a face to resolve, where shadow does more than detail. Key frames and mood pieces fix palette, lens and staging early, giving everyone downstream a target, and the designs have to be honest about what modelling, creature animation and compositing can deliver on a television schedule. Design and art direction sit at the front of the pipeline; this reel is a record of that stage.
The shots these designs led to are taken apart in the series’ VFX breakdown, on the The Devil’s Promise VFX work page.
