The Devil’s Promise VFX work
Layer by layer, this reel takes apart the visual-effects and animation shots Terminal FX contributed to The Devil’s Promise. The 2022 six-part supernatural thriller was produced by MBC Studios for Shahid VIP, directed by Colin Teague and written by Tony Jordan; it was shot in Cairo with Paula Patton, Amr Youssef and Aïcha Ben Ahmed, and draws on jinn folklore.
Supernatural drama has to convince in the middle of otherwise ordinary scenes. The effect has to feel like it belongs to the room the actors were standing in, which means matching a location’s own light, its dust and its bounce rather than lighting a creature to look impressive on its own. Anything anatomically unfamiliar has to be animated with weight and intent so the performance reads as a presence rather than a moving asset, and interaction sells it — contact shadows, disturbed air, a reaction from the actor. Around that sits the preparation nobody sees: rotoscoping and cleanup, tracked camera, rig and marker removal, plates readied so the composite holds up shot after shot. Long-form television of this kind is familiar territory for the studio.
The series’ creature and demon designs are on the concept art and character work for The Devil’s Promise page.
