Pegasus VFX Breakdown
Pegasus, Han Han’s 2019 Lunar New Year racing comedy starring Shen Teng, is the subject of this breakdown. It sets Terminal FX’s finished shots beside the footage they came from, covering the vehicle work, environment extension, cleanup and compositing that turn road photography shot under control into a rally stage taken at speed.
Cars are unforgiving subjects, because everyone in the audience already knows what one looks like. A digital vehicle has to be modelled and shaded to the tolerance of reflective bodywork, then animated with the suspension travel and weight transfer the eye anticipates; a wheel that slips against the road by a single frame is noticed even when nobody can say why. Speed itself is built rather than filmed — dust, grit, spray and heat haze simulated around the tyres, motion blur and shutter behaviour matched to the camera, roadside detail multiplied so it streams past at the right rate. Behind that, environment extension and digital matte work lengthen a stage no production can close off entirely, while tracking, paint-out and compositing take the towing and mounting hardware back out of the frame. This breakdown shows Terminal FX doing that work on Pegasus.
