Dragon Game Cinematic

Commercial

Built around a CG dragon, this game cinematic pairs creature modeling, character animation, effects simulation and compositing. In the frame shown, a rider crouches low on the beast’s neck as it banks over a city spread out far below in a grid of orange lights, night air and haze between them. Terminal FX’s creature and cinematic work on the project sits in our game cinematics portfolio.

A creature this size sets the terms for everything else. Anatomy and weight are decided first, because the wingbeat rate, the way the body settles between strokes and the drag on membranes and spines are what tell an audience how heavy a dragon is. Muscle and skin deformation carry the closer shots; cloth and hair simulation keep the rider bound to the animation instead of floating on top of it. A night flight over a city adds problems of its own — light spilling up from the ground, atmospheric depth, haze and volumetrics the creature has to stay readable through — and compositing has to preserve silhouette and contrast in a very dark frame. Creature work like this is what Terminal FX builds cinematics around.
