Wolfhound

Wolfhound is a 2006 Russian fantasy adventure film directed by Nikolai Lebedev, adapted from Maria Semenova’s novel Wolfhound of the Grey Dog Clan (Volkodav iz roda Serykh Psov). It stars Aleksandr Bukharov as the last survivor of a slaughtered clan, hunting the warlord who destroyed it, with Oksana Akinshina and Igor Petrenko; it was one of the most expensive Russian productions of its era.

Slavic fantasy epics ask for scale before anything else. Battles fought with sword and shield need crowd simulation to swell a limited body of extras into an army, blood and impact work judged at the level of the individual blow, and fire, smoke and weather simulation across sieges and open ground. Fortresses, forests and mountain passes come from CG environments and matte painting extended above whatever was practically built; creature and character animation carry the story’s beasts and omens; and every plate passes through rotoscoping, wire and rig removal and compositing before the period illusion holds. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to Wolfhound as part of its film, television and commercial portfolio.
