VFX Work for Sherlock and Daughter
This page presents Terminal FX’s visual-effects breakdown for Sherlock & Daughter, the 2025 mystery series led by David Thewlis and Blu Hunt. A breakdown is a working document rather than a trailer: it takes finished shots apart and shows the layers underneath — the photographed plate, roto and matte extraction, digital set and environment builds, atmospherics, and then the graded composite an audience actually sees. The disciplines on display are the ones period television leans on hardest: set extension, matte painting, cleanup and compositing.
Work like this is judged by whether anyone notices it. Every added rooftop and every deleted satellite dish has to sit on a moving camera, so matchmove and tracking come first; then rotoscoping around hair, hats and steam, edge work fine enough to survive a long lens, and grain, flare and lens character matched shot to shot so a digital element carries the same imperfections as a photographed one. Television compounds the problem: the same street, the same interior and the same weather have to agree across episodes cut weeks apart. That combination of environment work, cleanup and precise compositing sits at the centre of what Terminal FX does, and this breakdown is where those layers are laid bare.
