Third Part Animation
Filed simply as Third Part Animation, this is a studio animation piece led by its hero object: the frame that fronts it holds a jewelled crown lying half-buried in sunlit sand, pearls and cut stones catching a low sun. Object work, shading, environment and compositing are the disciplines in play, and the piece belongs to Terminal FX’s animation and branded-content portfolio.
Jewellery is one of the hardest things to render honestly. Faceted stones live on refraction and dispersion — light bending inside the cut and splitting into colour — while pearls need a soft, layered sheen that no plain glossy surface can fake, and gold has to stay warm without turning orange. Put that object in sand and the difficulty doubles: grains have to settle into the setting, dust has to cling in the crevices, and the buried edge has to lose contrast exactly the way a real one would, rather than being pushed into a hole in the ground. At this distance the lens becomes part of the effect, so depth of field, highlight bloom and grain all have to be judged like a macro photograph. Careful, close-range visualization of this kind is a standing part of what the studio does.
