The Last Mercenary

The Last Mercenary is a 2021 French action comedy film directed by David Charhon and released on Netflix. It stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as a former secret service agent who returns to France when his estranged son is framed, alongside Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla and Éric Judor.

An action comedy has to sell its stunts and then get out of the way of the joke, and that balance is assembled in post. Vehicle and pyrotechnic simulation give a chase its consequences, muzzle flashes and impact debris finish the gunplay, wire and rig removal lets a fight read as one unbroken take, and crane, cable and safety-gear paint-outs keep the apparatus off screen. Digital set extensions then place French city exteriors behind an already crowded frame. Terminal FX operates across each of these areas — FX and destruction simulation, cleanup, CG environments and compositing — and contributed visual effects and animation to The Last Mercenary, among the film, television and commercial titles in the studio’s portfolio.
