The Battle at Lake Changjin

Filmographybona-film-group

The Battle at Lake Changjin is a 2021 Chinese war epic directed by Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark and Dante Lam. Dramatising the Korean War’s Battle of Chosin Reservoir, it stars Wu Jing and Jackson Yee as brothers serving in a People’s Volunteer Army company sent into the frozen north-east Korean mountains in the winter of 1950. One of the most expensive Chinese productions ever mounted, it broke Chinese box-office records on release and spawned a 2022 sequel.

Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to The Battle at Lake Changjin, and the reel on this page is a shot breakdown drawn from that work. Rather than replay the drama, it strips finished battlefield frames back to their components: the photographed plate and its limited set, the digital terrain and extensions built around it, simulated snow, smoke and fire, digital doubles and crowd, and the composite that welds all of it into a single exposure.

War photography like this is unforgiving to effects. Simulation has to obey scale — snow that drifts and packs, smoke that moves like freezing air, blasts with the right mass and debris falloff. Crowd and digital-double work has to read as choreography rather than duplication: soldiers who respond to concussion, to terrain and to one another. And because every frame stacks dozens of layers, compositing decides it — matched contrast, atmospheric depth, and interactive light from muzzle flashes and burning wreckage spilling onto photographed faces. FX and destruction simulation, CG environments and heavy-layer integration are core Terminal FX disciplines, and this breakdown shows them assembled shot by shot.
