VFX and character work for Hellboy: The Crooked Man
Gathered here as a breakdown: the visual-effects and character work Terminal FX took on for Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Brian Taylor’s 2024 folk-horror entry in the Hellboy series. The emphasis falls on character — figures that begin in makeup and live-action photography and are carried the rest of the way digitally — together with the animation, cleanup and compositing needed to seat them in the frame.
Character work of this kind is a negotiation with what the camera already captured. A performance delivered under prosthetics has to be extended digitally without being flattened: the face tracked closely enough that additions never slide, added anatomy lit to agree with the key light on set, animation weighted so a body of that size moves the way the staging implies. Transformations and apparitions bring simulation into the same shots — cloth, hair, smoke, fire — and each layer then has to be rotoscoped, cleaned and composited into low-key photography where the grain is loud and a soft edge shows immediately. Terminal FX works across creature and character animation, FX simulation, cleanup and compositing, and this breakdown covers that side of the studio’s contribution to Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
