Cloth simulation test

Film Showreel

A technical test in cloth and fabric dynamics: draping, folding, tearing and wind-driven motion, simulated so that the material carries convincing weight and stiffness. Tests like this exist to prove a setup before it is trusted with a shot — a controlled piece of research rather than a delivered sequence.

Fabric is difficult to fake, because audiences read it instinctively. Weight, thickness and how tightly a weave resists stretching all have to be tuned before the cloth reads as silk rather than canvas; too little damping and it flutters like paper, too much and it moves like rubber. Collisions are the hard part: cloth against a body, against itself in a fold, and against anything it drapes over, resolved without the surface passing through itself or jittering. Tearing adds another layer, since the material has to fail along a plausible line and keep simulating afterwards. Then the result still has to be groomed for the camera — art-directed so the folds land where the shot needs them without breaking the physics. Dynamics and simulation underpin much of the work Terminal FX does, and this test is where that groundwork is laid.
